PROBLEM AREA
Digitising European Industry is a strategy that aims to strengthen the EU competitiveness through digital technologies and to ensure that any company in any sector, whether large or small, is advanced through digital innovation. This requires more than a dynamic digital environment in Europe, it requires a comprehensive integration of digital innovation across all sectors of the economy.
European industry and policy leaders initiated the establishment of the Platform for Digitising European Industry that consists of national initiatives of the EU member states. This is a significant step towards the future prosperity of the European economy and society.
However, in order for the digital industry transformation to mean more than paperwork of the EU industrial and policy leaders, companies need restructuring. This mission is carried out by Digital Innovation Hubs (DIH) that are being established and that speak the language of small and medium enterprises, understand their needs, business models and changes.
Lithuanian companies have long been well aware of the necessity and benefits of digitalisation, but often they, especially in case of small and medium ones, do not know what new technologies to buy, and lack know-how of introducing the latter. Moreover, they need advice on digitising business, production processes, products and services, and on what to begin their employee training with. Often companies have insufficient funds for this. Therefore, DIH aims to support the transition of Lithuanian industry (especially SMEs) to high-skilled and high-tech production by increasing the technological readiness, productivity and global competitiveness of Lithuanian engineering industries.
THE EUROPEAN STRATEGY
The Digital Transformation Strategy developed by the European Commission includes the development of the DIH network, and aims to transfer the technologies developed in the old Member States that are the European innovators as close as possible to traditional industrial, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in all the member states. This aims to:
- Improve their technological readiness and encourage the transition to the development of higher value-added products while preserving the ability of SMEs to survive in the value chains of the old European states.
- Introduce as the highest possible number of digitised manufacturing machines, industrial equipment, artificial intelligence, and non-human technological solutions.
- Integrate into new intersectoral, international value chains and achieve that the growth of social and economic prosperity is distributed among all the European citizens as evenly as possible.
Digital transformation significantly contributes to wealth creation:
- Wages and standards of living are increasing in all the European regions, including Lithuania.
- The share of cheap labour in the new EU states is decreasing.
- Cheap labour migration into the old Europe is being stopped.
ADVANCED MANUFACTURING DIGITAL INNOVATION HUB
DIH, the Digital Innovation Hubs is a support tool for boosting business competitiveness through the use of digital technologies to improve business or production processes, products and services.
Advanced Manufacturing Digital Innovation Hub established in 2012 is a digital innovation hub operating in Lithuania.
Our mission is to boost the competitiveness of Lithuanian companies by bringing together Lithuanian ecosystem members.
Our vision is the Lithuanian ecosystem engine, a reliable, entrepreneurial member of the Pan-European Network of Digital Innovation Hubs.
DIH Coordinator is Intechcentras, the SMART Manufacturing Competence Centre.

PLANS IN LITHUANIA
In Lithuania, the goal is to integrate the innovation ecosystem of the Lithuanian manufacturing sector into the European innovation ecosystem and the DIH network. Advanced Manufacturing Digital Innovation Hub established in 2012 is already providing advisory and training services in the implementation of modern digital technologies in traditional Lithuanian industries. This is especially true for the sectors of digital manufacturing, smart technologies, digital photonics, the big data, industrial Internet, and robotics. This Hub is already recognized as a link of chain of digital innovation hubs being established throughout Europe.
A draft strategic document on the establishment of DIHs in Lithuania has been submitted to the Ministry of Economy. The overall goal of such hubs is to:
- Support the transition of Lithuanian industry (especially SMEs) to high-skilled and high-tech production, to increase the technological readiness, productivity and global competitiveness of Lithuanian engineering industries.
- Familiarise hands-on with the best digitisation practices, their benefits and payback opportunities, and encourage companies to introduce cutting-edge technologies.
DIH BENEFITS
DIHs enable any company to get up-to-date information, expert support, and access to technologies to test and pilot digital innovations with company products, processes, or business models. Otherwise speaking, DIHs are one-stop shops for companies to digitise business within and outside their local area. The hubs use business principles and a standard service model to help clients address tasks at hand, and provide services otherwise not readily accessible.
Moreover, DIHs act as intermediaries for investor relations, facilitate access to finance for digital change, and pool digital innovation users and suppliers together in the value chain. Another important role of DIHs is to assess company needs for digital skills and their application.
Moreover, DIHs contribute to the coordinated implementation of industrial digitalisation initiatives across all sectors, by the targeted use of European Union investment funds to digitise Lithuanian industry, and by creating appropriate regulatory environment for this purpose. Taking advantage of the support of the European funds for digitisation programs, the Hub aims to facilitate access of Lithuanian companies to targeted funding for digital transformation.
The Hub is a one-stop-shop for companies providing up-to-date information, expert support, and access to technology for testing digital innovations. It helps to pilot products, processes or business models.
DIH aims for significant changes in the digitisation of Lithuanian industries, thereby increasing their competitiveness and added value they develop. This includes:
- Access to centres of excellence
- The heart of the innovation ecosystem
- Intermediation services
- Facilitated access to financing
- Education, training and advisory services
