Learning about implementing and using a Digital Process Twin in a production value chain – LeaDTchain project

Industrial companies are continuously confronted with new challenges such as shorter product life cycles, higher process complexity due to the individualization of products and an increasing need for a sustainable business. A Digital Process Twin (DPT) can help companies to remain competitive and overcome these challenges. The DPT collects real data in production, e.g. with the help of a traceability system, which is then digitally evaluated. In this way, occurring problems can already be detected in the emergence phase and corresponding countermeasures can be initiated promptly. In this way, negative effects on quality, delivery times and resource efficiency can be avoided. Currently, the DPT is only used sporadically in industry. In earlier years, this was mainly due to the lack of available data and existing technologies. Currently, the lack of digital skills among employees and insufficient integration into existing organizational structures are the main reasons for this.

The aim of the project is the development of digital and competence-oriented learning units for shop floor managers and decision-makers to address the impact of DPT on humans, technology and organization. The first learning unit deals with the technical implementation of a Digital Twin for an entire value stream. After successfully completing this course, shop floor managers and decision-makers will be able to follow a structured procedure for the implementation of a DPT in their own company. The focus of the second learning unit is the integration of the DPT into existing organizational structures as well as daily processes. Against this background, shop floor managers and decision-makers will know about potential challenges and how to overcome them. The third learning unit is about the training and preparation of shop floor managers and decision-makers for the correct application of the Digital Twin for an entire value stream. By this, they will be enabled to use the DPT in the company correctly to support the continuous improvement process.

Technology Centre InTechCentras shares its impressions from the study visit of 18 November 2021 to the MADE Competency Center Industry 4.0 in Milan, Italy (established in 2019, covering 2,500 sq. m., € 9.6 million of investment, 46 technology partners).

During the study visit, the participants learned about the Center activities and the demonstrated technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence, the Internet of Things, Product 4.0, Maintenance 4.0, robotics, cybersecurity, sustainability and others.

‘Seeing solutions and technologies of Industry 4.0 concentrated in one place is a great experience.

The Italian cultural difference is that they tend to first test new technologies in a simulated environment, build a real industrial prototype if successful, and only after solving all possible technical glitches do they release it into industrial production. The MADE Center is a very good example of what an Industry 4.0 center would be like in Lithuania.

The visit was a great environment for networking. The participants, being professionals in their field, had the unique opportunity to share their impressions, best practices and ideas for the practical application of the technology.’

Rimantas Damanskis, Director of Pack Klaipeda, UAB, Member of the LINPRA Presidium

We share some of the visit moments and invite you to join us in 2022 during other visits to technology centers in Germany, Sweden, France, etc., organised by InTechCentras.

Intechcentras, the coordinator of the Advanced Manufacturing Digital Innovation Center, has become one of the 9 European Digital Innovation Hubs selected to participate in the international Boosting Widening Digital Innovation Hubs (BOWI) two phases support program for experience exchange and technology application.

The winners of the second Open Call for developing digital innovation hubs (DIHs), chosen amongst 35 applications from 15 regions will become part of a 21-month program activities divided into two stages and will receive up to €100,000 funding. During the BOWI support programme selected hubs will be able to refine their technology offering, business models and their role in own regional ecosystem by applying the knowledge shared by the more experienced – mature – DIHs. BOWI’s mature DIHs have long-term experience in tackling the most challenging projects and a wide network of partners that newly selected DIHs will be able to benefit from.
